Chapter 1 Overview of Taipei

The exact time when development of the Taipei Basin began is unknown. The Chen Lai-zhang Land Grant received approval to develop the Tagala area along the bank of Tamsui River in 1709. The area was originally the home of the Ketagalan people, after being developed by Han immigrants, commercial activity increased, and the area grew in importance. The Qing Dynasty approved the establishment of Taipei Prefecture in 1875, and the city walls of Taipei were completed in 1884. The area became the “Taipei Prefecture-controlled City” during the Japanese Colonial Period. The name “Taipei City” first appeared in the 9th year of Taisho of the Japanese Colonial Period, when “Taipei City Hall” was formally established.
